Canyon Country Field Notes

Terms of use

What these pages offer a reader, and where their usefulness ends.

A publication, not an authority

Canyon Country Field Notes offers general information on the archaeology, public lands and backcountry of southeast Utah and the Four Corners. It is not an agency, grants no permits and speaks for no landowner. A visitor is bound by the rules the Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, the National Park Service, the State of Utah and the tribal nations set for their own lands. If something on these pages conflicts with an official notice, follow the notice.

Every page has a date

Each piece was researched with the sources that existed when it was written and holds good for that moment. Fees, closures, roads, monument boundaries and court rulings have all shifted in recent years and will shift again, so confirm anything important with the office responsible before acting on it. Mistakes reported on the contact page are fixed once they are confirmed.

The backcountry is the reader’s responsibility

Flash floods, summer heat, freezing nights, loose rock, long distances to help and clay roads that turn impassable in rain are all real here, and a well-written page does not make any of them smaller. Each traveler answers for their own preparation and decisions.

Sites and the law

These pages give no one leave to enter a closed area, pick up an artifact or touch a wall or panel. Archaeological resources on public land are protected by federal and state law with serious penalties, and questions asking where a site is go unanswered.

Sources elsewhere

Links lead to pages run by other people, included because they support a fact. Linking to a page says nothing about the rest of that website.

Quoting

Brief quotation is permitted when Canyon Country Field Notes is credited and the quoted page linked. Copying a full piece, or nearly all of one, is not allowed.

Revisions

These terms are revised when the site changes; this page always holds the text in force.
