Most of the canyon country is federal public land, managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service, with state school trust parcels scattered through it and tribal land to the south. Since 2016 the national monument drawn around it has been proclaimed, reduced, restored and reduced again, and each change has been argued over in Washington, in Salt Lake City and in the towns nearest the land.
The pieces here record those decisions as of their dates: what each proclamation did, what a land sale or a resolution said, who supported it and who opposed it. Politics is reported, not argued. For visiting the land under whatever rules apply today, see Visiting with respect.
